Alto Golf Description

The Alto Golf Course is a 18 hole course located close to the fishing village of Alvor near to Portimao. This course is situated close enough to the ocean to give the player an occasional sea view. A simple par 3 opens your round but it is deceiving to what is in store. The Alto Golf Course is considered a good test of the ability of the player with strategic bunkers, dog-legs, elevated greens and well placed trees. A further noteworthy challenge is the par 5 on the sixteenth that is considered to be one of the longest holes in Europe.

A challenging course with a nice setting close to the ocean, with old trees and smooth hills . The twilight rate of 36 € is unbeatable in this region. Fairways needed a little repair and the greens are a little slow. I’d like to come again.
Great course

Really nice course, some tight fairways and tough greens. Very well maintained but greens had been hollow tined earlier in the week so a bit bumpy. Would recommend a visit.

Alto Golf Course Review – May 2025 During our mid-May golf trip to the Algarve, a group of six of us from the UK had the pleasure of playing Alto Golf Course. While the course itself offers a distinct and challenging layout, it was the people that made our day truly memorable. Service and Hospitality: From the moment we arrived, the staff at Alto were outstanding. From the friendly and helpful woman in the pro shop to the caddy master, starter, and bar staff—everyone we encountered was welcoming and went out of their way to ensure we had a great experience. The hospitality here is truly top-notch. Clubhouse & Facilities: The clubhouse is inviting and relaxed, with an outdoor seating area that overlooks the approach and green of the 18th hole. It’s a lovely place to wind down after your round, enjoy a drink, and take in the final action on the course. Course Layout and Challenge: Alto is a tight, tree-lined course that demands accuracy and smart course management. It’s not overly long, but definitely rewards a strategic approach. The fairways are narrow and framed by mature trees, requiring precise tee shots. The greens are small, and positioning into them is critical—approaching from the wrong angle often leaves a very difficult up-and-down. Playability: This is very much a plotter’s course. It’s ideal for golfers who enjoy shaping shots, managing risk, and thinking their way around the layout. If you like target golf and a good mental test, Alto delivers. Minor Downside: The only negative during our round was some tree maintenance being carried out between two fairways. Unfortunately, it looked quite hazardous for the workers, as they were positioned well within tee shot range from two holes. Hopefully this is addressed for safety going forward, as it was a concern during play. Overall Impression: Despite the brief disruption, Alto Golf Course was a fantastic experience. It offers great value for money, a warm and friendly atmosphere, and a course layout that rewards smart play. We’ll definitely be returning on our next trip to the Algarve.
